Zagoria, the Land Beyond the Mountains  

At the far northwestern edge of Greece, where the Balkans rise like grey stone fortresses, lies a secret world — the Land of Zagoria. Scattered across the slopes of Mount Timfi, its forty-six villages seem to have grown out of the mountain itself, blending into a landscape of forests, gorges, and tumbling streams. Here, in the heart of the Vikos–Aoos National Park, the Vikos Gorge — a UNESCO World Heritage site — slices a thousand-metre chasm through the rock, one of the deepest in the world. Along the old mule trails that once linked these remote hamlets, hikers now discover a wilderness of astonishing beauty: dense beech and pine forests sheltering rare wildlife, graceful stone bridges arching over crystal waters, and villages lovingly restored by a new generation returning to breathe life into their ancestral land.
