Karnataka, between ancient cities and the shores of the Indian Ocean

In southern India, Karnataka bears the imprint of the ancient kingdoms of the Deccan. In Hampi, chaotic granite boulders and scattered temples form an almost unreal landscape. Further north, Badami and its rock-cut sanctuaries, carved into ochre cliffs, tell a story literally sculpted into the rock face. In Shravanabelagola, a monumental Jain statue rises above the hill, drawing both pilgrims and visitors alike. From Bangalore, the state capital, to Mysore, former princely kingdom, and down to Gokarna where beaches and temples coexist among some of the oldest in the country, the region reveals itself through a succession of contrasts.
